Wow, I'm discovering so many new artist lately, it's getting hard to keep up! :D The latest one in my Pop-Up Artist series, is NY based duo Phantogram. Named after an optical illusion, their music is quite something! It's like electronic rock mixed with hiphop influences : with piercing vocals and heavy synths, their unique sound captures you in an instant! Their latest single "Fall In Love" is already a couple of months old, but I was instantly sold when I heard the chorus. It draws you in immediately, with the underlying hypnotizing chants even fortifying Sarah Barthel's vocals. It must be said: hiphop producer Big Boi has done a great job producing this and everything else on their latest album "Voices"! Staying true to their name, the video for the song is also very visually entertaining! Watch "Fall In Love" below. And for those of you who are interested: Phantogram is set to perform at HET STUK in Leuven on May 19th! Tickets are still available. |

In the category "Creepy and twisted video's", this new Brooke Candy clip definitely takes the cake! The white LA-based rapper is serving up some horrifying, albeit intriguing, visuals in the clip for her first official single "Opulence". Frankly, I've already forgotten what the song sounds like, because that video will haunt me for the rest of the day! And I my have figured out why: Lady Gaga's former right hand, Thierry Mugler stylist Nicola Formichetti, has unleashed his inner demons with this video. It's like Lady Gaga on steroids! So, since Formichetti art directed the whole shabang, it's no wonder we see Brooke Candy beating a guy up and transforming from one crazy haired diva to another, all while covered in a shitload of diamonds and jewels. Makes me wonder what ever happened to normal videos of people staring into the distance and singing in the rain? Oh well, watch all the shenanigans go down below.
A lot of great artists have come forward through BBC's Sound of 2014 (e.g. Sam Smith, George Ezra and Ella Eyre) and yet another nominee is proving that she's here to stay! BANKS is a pretty mysterious LA-based singer-songwriter: I have no idea how old she is and her management runs all her social media. She does hand out her personal phonenumber on Facebook, though. ^^ So, little is known about her, but what we do know is that her debut album titled "Goddess" is set for release on September 9th and she has already premiered the titletrack! It's a smooth, loungy kind of number, perfect for those chill lonely nights at home. For those of you expecting a song with a big climax, don't, because there isn't any. The beats and track itself are soo hypnotizing through BANKS' sweet and delicate voice, the background chants and the Timbaland-like arrangement. The perfect song to just forget about your worries for a moment and escape to a faraway land. So grab a glass of wine, sit back, relax and watch the lyric video below.
After weeks and even months of teasing, Disney starlet Ariana Grande's (or Mini Mariah as I like to call her) much anticipated collab "Problem" with Iggy Azalea finally arrived on iTunes! But before the iTunes release, all her Arianators got an early taste of the track when she premiered it on live tv during a performance at the Radio Disney Music Awards. I'm glad she left her signature cutesy style at home for this performance and went for a more mature look: a tight black bodice with pants and Mickey Mouse ears (great way of pledging allegiance to The House Of Mouse ^^). Plus, I had absolutely no idea girl could dance like that, all while delivering some great live vocals! Not bad for a 20 year-old. Obviously, the hype surrounding this song was totally justified, because it is EVERYTHING! I'm used to hearing Ariana belt out gorgeous ballads, but "Problem" is the total opposite from her usual comfort zone. The track revolves around this sax sample that blows my mind (a little inspired by Jason Derulo's "Talk Dirty" perhaps), reminiscent of '90s pop mixed with the current urban trend. The constant catchiness of it all is just so captivating! And once again it's clear that Ariana has some serious pipes on her tiny little frame! I do have to admit it's not the most original song out there, but it may well be a bigger hit for Ariana in Europe, unlike "The Way". "The Way" was a mega-hit overseas, but didn't quite break the mold over here. Let's hope "Problem" does, because it's one hell of a song! Watch her live performance, as well as the stunning black and white lyric video below. |
